A new education and neighborhood center – B[U]ILDWEG PLUS – is being built on the Siemens-Nixdorf site in the Röthenbach district of Nuremberg, which has been vacant for years. Following the conversion of the original offce building, around 720 pupils will find space to further their education on around 13,000 m² of the total 21,100 m² area. New walls structure the spacious open space, shield the busy traffc and create various areas on diffierent levels. Raised gardens, green spaces, a playground, sports facilities, etc. are available to both pupils and residents of the surrounding neighborhood. Cyclists and pedestrians on the canal side will also be invited to use the site and its building. The educational building sees itself as an open system – not only for students and teachers, but also for the neighborhood. The basement, first floor and top floor open up to the public and thus represent the interface between educational and neighborhood life. With its food hall, galleries, bicycle workshop, black light mini golf, multi-purpose hall, rooftop bar, etc., B[U]ILDWEG PLUS is more than just a school building. Shared areas and multiple uses create synergies and promote a new understanding of school as a social space.
