In cooperation with floating e.V., the design takes place on the site of the Floating University in Berlin Kreuzberg, a location that has developed, without a building permit, into a symbol of a new architectural aesthetic. Under the term »circular architecture«, we encourage students to explore new approaches to planning and building.
Unlike the previous semester, this semester focuses on the interconnections between new and alternative water cycles and the interaction of architecture and infrastructure. We will specifically address valuable resources–such as human waste–that have largely been forgotten as by-products. A key emphasis will be on transparency and revealing processes that are normally hidden from visitors.
The semester is divided into three phases: foundations, development/implementation, and evaluation/documentation. The first phase focuses on knowledge building and the creation of a publication titled »Learning by Pooing«. Students will approach the topic of the sanitation transition and uncover the associated challenges.
In the second phase, the results will be summarized to focus on designing a new waterless toilet. Students will collectively build a 1:1 mock-up of the toilet on the site of the Floating University in Nuremberg, laying the foundation for the next and crucial step.
In the final phase, the toilet will be evaluated through a testing period.
