Architecture journalism is a relatively unknown discipline, although our built environment – with all its successful and less successful examples – is omnipresent. Critics from the fields of journalism and science document, comment on and evaluate architectural and urban development events such as exhibitions, interventions or changes in public space and make them accessible to a broad public. Well-founded architectural journalism has the potential to initiate important social debates about the creative, social, political and philosophical aspects of architecture and urban development and to carry them into the broader society. It is essential for planners to understand the contexts in which they design. Feedback on the levels of impact of designs and the risks of decisions is a valuable tool for practitioners.
In this seminar, we will take on the perspective of architecture journalists and practice architectural criticism. We will enter into a dialogue with our built environment, explore the processes behind decisions, and try to critically question them. The aim is to contribute to the discussion of architecture and to introduce new perspectives into the architectural discourse. The seminar creates a space to analyse, discuss and reflect on specific events and challenges of urban development together.
Writing about architecture is a demanding process that requires practice and exchange. In the seminar, we will work together in several block sessions to develop questions on architectural or urban planning topics. Each participant will receive individual support to sharpen their observations, deepen their analysis and enable them to make a reflective assessment. The aim is to combine this work into a well-founded text that documents the examination of architecture and urban development as a study achievement.
